Star Wars not only captured our hearts, but also our imaginations. In a galaxy a long time ago and very far away, humans, aliens and robots alike fought using advanced technologies and traveled at impossible speeds. Although many parts of the Star Wars universe are fantasy, the ways that the characters honor loved ones who have passed away are very real. From cremation to traditional burial, the funerals of Star Wars are closer to reality than science-fiction.
Here are some of our favorite Star Wars funeral moments:
Funeral of Qui-Gon Jinn

In the aftermath of the battle to end the Trade Federation's invasion of the planet Naboo, a funeral was held for Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn, who was killed by the Sith Lord Darth Maul during the battle. The funeral was attended by YodaMace Windu, Obi-Wan KenobAnakin SkywalkerQueen Padmé AmidalaBossNass, and Supreme Chancellor Sheev Palpatine. In this scene, we can see that traditional Jedi burials used cremation.

Funeral of Anakin Skywalker

In the aftermath of the Galactic Empire's defeat against the Alliance to Restore the Republic during the Battle of Endor, the Jedi Knight Luke Skywalker held a funeral for his fatherAnakin Skywalker, on the Forest Moon of Endor. This scene is particularly powerful because not only does Luke get emotional closure, but he gets to pay respect to his father. Although he becomes Darth Vader, Anakin began as a Jedi Master and thus, receives a traditional Jedi cremation.
Funeral of Shmi Skywalker Lars
Shmi passed away after being captured and imprisoned by Tusken Raiders. She was recovered from the Tusken Raider camp by her son, Padawan Anakin Skywalker. Shmi was buried at the Lars moisture farm on Tatooine with a gravestone marking her grave. Perhaps, traditional burial may have been the funeral of choice for Tatooine farmers.

Funeral of Padmé Amidala
After her death on the asteroid Polis Massa, a funeral was held for Senator Padmé Amidala on her homeworld of Naboo. Amidala, who died after giving birth to twin children, Luke and Leiawas mourned by thousands of Naboo citizens during her funeral in the capital city of Theed. We can see that royal funerals in Naboo used embalmbing, so that family and friends could have a public wake and funeral procession.
Funeral of Onaconda Farr
funeral for Senator Onaconda Farr was held on the planet Coruscant a few days after his deathFarr's aide Silood held the eulogy while Senate Guards served as the ceremonial honor guard. Here we can see what a military funeral looks like in the Star Wars universe. Turns out, they look very similar to Earth's military funerals, having a eulogy and full military honors.

May the fourth be with you!
